I came up with these monster cookies for my daughter’s Halloween party at school on Wednesday ….
I knew that I wanted to make the M&M and white chocolate chip cookies that I made this past Valentines day but Halloween-style so instead of the pink and red M&M’s, I used orange and yellow M&M’s, then added some white chocolate chips and Halloween inspired sprinkles and to finish them off I added some googly eyes.
I got the idea of adding googly eyes from Naomi at Bakers Royale. I had also seen other versions of googly eye cookies on pinterest so adding googly eyes had been on my mind!
I made two batches of cookies keeping the M&M’s and white chocolate chips constant in both batches…I just switched up the colors of the sprinkles that I used… in the first batch I used black and purple nonpareils for the sprinkles and instantly (and might I add temporarily) regretted that decision as they looked a little gross in the cookie batter, I mean they had little black dots in them what was I thinking?! …but I decided to embrace the whole monster theme and added the googly eyes and some purple sprinkles for the eyebrows and make them angry monsters and they ended up being my favorite of the two batches.
As you can see below I added the eyebrow sprinkles and googly eyes (and sea salt) after forming the dough into little balls on the baking sheet (and before baking them in the oven), I just pressed the eyebrow sprinkles and googly eyes down lightly into the cookie.
For the second batch, I used white nonpareil sprinkles and they looked cute and pretty so I just added the eyes, no eyebrows..so we had some nice monsters in there:).
All in all they were a lot of fun to make and a big hit at the party!
Happy early Halloween!

- 2 cups minus 2 tablespoons (8 1/2 ounces) cake flour
- 1 2/3 cups (8 ½ ounces) bread flour
- 1 ¼ teaspoons baking soda
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons salt
- 2 ½ sticks ( 1 ¼ cups) unsalted butter
- 1 1/4 cups (10 ounces) light brown sugar
- 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons (8 ounces) granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons natural vanilla extract
- 13 oz of milk chocolate M&M's (I used yellow and orange M&M's for these cookies)
- 7 oz of white chocolate chips (I used Ghiradelli White Chocolate Chips)
- 1/3 cup of mini sprinkles
- sea salt
- 72 googly eyes (about a package and a half per batch)
- purple sprinkles for eyebrows
- 1. Sift flours, baking soda, baking powder and salt into a bowl. Set aside.
- 2. Using a mixer fitted with paddle attachment, cream butter and sugars together until very light and fluffy, about 5 minutes.
- 3. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla. Reduce speed to low, add dry ingredients and mix until just combined, 5 to 10 seconds.
- 4. Drop candy pieces and sprinkles in and incorporate them without breaking them. Press plastic wrap against dough and refrigerate for 24 to 36 hours (or up to 72 hours).
- 5. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350 degrees and take out the chilled cookie dough about 20 to 30 minutes before to give it time to warm up a bit.
- 6. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a nonstick baking mat. Set aside.
- 7. Shape the dough into 1 inch size balls (approximately the size of a golf ball) and set onto the baking sheet, making sure to turn horizontally any chocolate pieces that are poking up; it will make for a more attractive cookie.
- 8. Sprinkle lightly with sea salt. Then add googly eyes and eyebrows (if desired) and bake for approximately 10 to 12 minutes in the oven (I bake mine for 11 minutes)…until partially baked and soft. Do not worry if cookie looks slightly under-baked, it will continue baking outside the oven.
- 9. Transfer sheet to a wire rack for 10 minutes or so. Then carefully transfer cookie to a baking rack.
- 10. Enjoy your freshly baked cookies!!
- They do sell orange, yellow and white candy corn M&M's but do not be fooled like I was...they are not traditional M&M's...they use white chocolate instead of milk chocolate and have a candy corn flavoring...while they might taste delicious in a cookie....it was not the taste I was going for so my husband sorted out orange and yellow M&M's for me (Thank you Lawrence!). This could also be a fun activity for kiddos too if old enough.
