My Mom and Aunt were visiting this week and we made some festive holiday ornaments with the Emster. It was so fun and Emma loved it (and we did too)! I thought Emma would just decorate the ornaments with the sequins and jewels but she wanted to roll the dough, make the tree shape with the cookie cutter and even used the straw to make the hole for the ornament hook/spring; not to mention decorate the trees with the sequins and jewel pieces!
This was so fun and easy. We will definitely be doing these again..maybe next time a glittery blue snowflake or a sparkly brown gingerbread man!
It was also fun to play with the dough afterwards. The dough has kept all week in a sealed plastic bag and Emma has enjoyed playing with it and the rolling pin!
If making these ornaments with little kids I definitely recommend putting the cut ornaments on little squares of wax paper before they decorate them so you can easily move them out of the way and give them a new one(s) to decorate…that way nothing gets smushed.
- 2 cups baking soda
- 1 cup corn starch
- 1 1/2 cups of warm water
- glitter, sequins & jewels (if desired)
- 1. Mix the dry ingredients in the cooking pot then add water.
- 2. Stir over medium heat until it starts bubbling and pulls way from the sides of the pot. It will begin to form a substance similar to play dough. That is when you remove it from the heat.
- 3. Let it cool then remove it from the pot and knead it into a soft ball of dough. If desired you may also add as much glitter as you would like at this kneading stage.
- 4. Roll out the dough and cut with cookie cutters. Place cut ornaments on wax paper. Make sure to make a hole at the top with a straw so you can run some ribbon through or an ornament hook.
- 5. Decorate with sequins and/or jewels.
- 6. Let ornaments dry for at least a day. Preferably 2 or 3.
- 7. Display and/or gift your creations!
- The tree cookie cutter we used was 3 inches tall by 3 1/4 inches wide at the widest point.
- We made 11 ornaments with this cookie cutter and could have easily made 2 or 3 more however we decided we had made enough and wanted to have some dough left over for Emma to play with.
- If 13 or 14 ornaments is too much and you do not need any play dough you could easily halve this recipe.
